Ahh, #sundayfunday. Time to relax and be lazy. Reading the paper in bed with your coffee and breakfast. Right?
Ehh, not so much when you’re a pastor’s family.
Sunday mornings can sometimes be a bit hectic around here, especially after nights where the youngin’ doesn’t sleep particularly well.
In general, this is how things tend to go on a normal Sunday.
Usually, Judah wakes up and has a bottle like any other day, and then we go downstairs for breakfast. He either sits in his highchair or his Exersaucer, and I sit next to him at the kitchen table with my makeup, cereal, and coffee. I’ll feed him while I try to get myself ready to go. You know… Two birds, one stone. Or something…
Judah was extra full of it today… He needed more attention than usual so I had to make some compromises. Like letting him play in his crib while I got dressed instead of playing with his toys in the living room. Or more like TRYING to get him to play in his crib. He wasn’t having it. But we made it. Whew!
I try to get to Bible class (which starts at 9:15 but I don’t manage to get there until at least 9:30 most weeks…) somewhat on time, and then we go to the late service after. (For those of you nefarious creatures who might take this info and use it for evil, just know that we have video surveillance on our home and lots of nosy neighbors. You’ve been warned.)
Once we get to church, someone (or lots of someones) from our church family usually takes Judah and plays with him during Bible class. Most of the time, he’s a very good boy. Which really, when it comes to babies, that’s about the best you can hope for. Amiright?
Our church firmly believes that children should be in church with their parents instead of off in a nursery somewhere. So Judah and I tend to sit in the back of the church, just in case he gets fussy, and we need leave for a bit to calm down. Which doesn’t happen often. Since we are used to having noisy kids in church, it’s not a big deal if Judah fusses or chatters or whines or laughs or makes crazy noises. My friend’s daughter, and sometimes my cousin’s kids, will sit with us when they’re at the service we go to so that’s a huge help. When he gets a bit older and is able to understand more about what’s going on during the service, we’ll probably move up closer to the front.
Because he was a bit off this morning, he conked out as soon as we left the parking lot on the way home. Unfortunately, when he falls asleep in the car, as soon as I take him out of his seat to go in the house, even if he’s only been sleeping for 2 minutes, he’s wide awake. Not at all interested in sleeping again. So naturally, when he fell asleep I drove to Burger King and picked up some lunch for myself. I ate it in the parking lot while listening to the radio. So peaceful. I was starving, and Eric had a meeting after church anyway so it worked well.
By the time we got home, the little guy had been asleep for about 45 minutes so it was at least a decent-ish nap. Plenty of energy to help me open up our Amazon subscribe and save delivery.
After church, we usually eat lunch and relax as a family. Freezer meals like these lasagna and chicken pot pie recipes are lifesavers on days like this. Today, after Eric got home and had lunch, he took over in the Judah department, and I took a nap. It was glorious.
Does your family have any Sunday traditions? Football? Family dinners?
