Happy Chocolate Mousse Day! I just love random, unknown holidays. One gets to celebrate all kinds of things one would have never thought to celebrate before. And to help you celebrate this particular holiday, I’ve provided below a creamy and sumptuous simple chocolate mousse recipe.
Chocolate mousse is an amazingly thick and fluffy and delectable French dessert, cooked on the stove with eggs to make it thick and rich and delicious. Drool-worthy, to be sure.
Not
But really, who has the time and energy to put into dealing with a dessert that could possibly be temperamental and complicated, especially after making an amazing dinner? Thankfully, there’s another way to make it which is still delicious but so much simpler.
This simple chocolate mousse recipe uses an instant pudding mix. It gives the mousse a thicker, creamier texture without using eggs and needing to cook it on the stove.
Simple and Delicious Chocolate Mousse
Notes
**This could be made with just the cocoa powder, just the chocolate chips, or neither, and it would still be delicious. **The mousse may still have some specks after you mix in the melted chocolate. That’s just because the cold cream cools off the chocolate quickly and can cause it to re-harden. If you don’t want that, you can add extra cocoa powder and omit the melted chocolate completely.
Ingredients
- 1 – 4 serving box of instant chocolate pudding mix
- 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 3 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 tbsp good quality chocolate, melted (I used semi-sweet)
Instructions
- Melt the chocolate chips; set aside to cool a bit.
- Combine pudding mix and cocoa powder in the bowl of a stand mixer (or a medium bowl, glass or metal preferably, if you don’t have a stand mixer). Add cream and vanilla and mix with the wire whisk attachment for about a minute and a half.
- Add the chocolate and slowly mix until just combined. It may still have some chocolate specks.
- Spoon mousse into a piping bag with a fancy tip, or into a zip top bag and cut the tip off, and pipe the mousse into glass cups. (Or if you’re not feeling fancy, spoon it into the individual cups or even into a storage bowl.)
- Serve immediately or store covered in the fridge.
Simple, right?
It was chocolatey without being overpowering, and it’s not overly sweet because there isn’t any added sugar on top of the pudding mix and chocolate. Sinfully rich without tasting like you’re dipping into a sugar bowl. If you wanted it sweeter, you could definitely add a bit of powdered sugar to the pudding mix. And if you wanted it to have more chocolate flavor, either add more cocoa powder or use bittersweet chocolate instead of semi-sweet.
Oh, and how gorgeous would this be served in some wine glasses or decorative glass dessert bowls? And don’t forget the garnish! Get extra whipping cream and whip up some whipped cream yourself, or grab a can or tub from the store. Drizzle it with chocolate sauce and top it with chocolate shavings and raspberries or strawberries, and you’ve got a decadent and elegant dessert that was super to make. Ooh, and if you want to really go crazy, put a Lindt Chocolate Truffle on top. Talk about decadent!
This simple chocolate mousse would be such an elegant option for your next party as well, no matter how you serve it. It would make an amazing filling in a layer cake! In fact, this might just be a part of my next cake because Easter is coming, after all. This mousse would also be delicious as a filling in a cupcake.
So be sure to mark April 3rd on your calendar as National Chocolate Mousse Day and save this post so you can be sure to celebrate every year! (And any other time the mood strikes…)
What is your favorite random “holiday” and how do you celebrate it?
If you make this, let me know! I’d love to hear how it turned out.
